Sefer Hachinuch (62 and 511) gives a similar explanation for the prohibition against 'Kishuf', which he identifies with alchemy. Ayem sham, it's right up your alley.

Also, I've seen, but can't for the life of me recall where, that 'kilayim' is prohibited specifically for Jews, because manipulating creation isn't evil per se, but lends itself to exploitation. The Torah forbids Jews from engaging in 'kilayim' so that they can be the voice which speaks out against abuses. I'll let you know if I remember where I saw that.
